Walk With Me

Friends,

The decision to reveal my wife's diagnoses of early onset dementia wasn't my idea: it was my kids'. They told me we could make other families like ours feel less alone and show them there's nothing to be ashamed of. So I sat down to tell our story, first to close friends and staff, then to the County, then on national radio.

I thought we'd be comforting others by going public. Instead, it is we who have been overwhelmed by messages of support, emails and calls and tweets and letters, comments from strangers and embraces from friends, promises of prayer, and words of sympathy and of strength.

What this has meant to my family is incalculable. But there are many more families like mine, and there is more to be done. We can widen the circle of our compassion to the millions of families living with or losing loved ones to this disease. Of the top ten leading causes of death in America, Alzheimer’s is the only one that cannot be slowed, prevented, or cured. But that can change. Over the years, research and innovation have awoken us from the nightmare of so many illnesses. It's Alzheimer’s turn.

On Saturday, October 27, I will be joining thousands of people for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. It begins at 9:30 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. For information on how to join my team (as a donor, a walker, or both), please see the bottom of this email. Registration is free, and you can donate to our team even if you can’t make it to the event. If in the end what works best for you is simply to extend your thoughts and prayers to my team as we walk, I hope you know that is more than enough.

Even now, there is not a day I can't wait to go home to be with Cis. I heard a man once describe doing the dishes for his wife as "writing a love letter with both hands." I'll be out there Saturday morning writing mine with my feet.

 Thank you for your support.
